The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has laid a charge of sexual assault against Cpl. Gregory Deagle, a member of Pictou District RCMP.

SiRT was contacted on December 28, 2019, by Bible Hill RCMP, regarding an allegation of sexual assault against a female known to the RCMP member. The incident is alleged to have occurred earlier that month. As a result, SiRT commenced an investigation that day.

Cpl. Deagle will appear in Truro provincial court on March 4, 2020.

SIRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia.

The team can independently launch an investigation or begin one after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.

A public report summarizing the results of the investigation must be filed within three months after it is finished.
