SiRT Concludes Investigation into Police Shooting

Mar

The Interim Director of the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) found no reasonable grounds to believe that a member of the Codiac Regional RCMP committed a criminal offence in connection with the shooting of a man in May 2023.

The RCMP responded to a 911 call on May 15, 2023, regarding a man with a weapon at a residence in Moncton. When police attempted to arrest the man, he threatened them with a stick in a confined space, despite being told to drop his weapon.

The officers acted to defend themselves and other officers from a reasonably perceived threat. One officer discharged his conducted energy weapon (taser) and another officer fired one shot from his firearm, which struck the man in the chest. The man was treated in hospital and has since recovered.
