SiRT Investigating Police Shooting in Pictou Landing

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving the discharge of a firearm by the RCMP which resulted in serious injury.

Early on January 1, 2024, the SiRT was contacted regarding a police shooting of a male in Pictou Landing, Nova Scotia on December 31, 2023. Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • The RCMP were called to an incident where a male was allegedly threatening to harm himself and others with a weapon and was allegedly involved in a domestic assault.
  • Two officers were approached by the male and ultimately discharged a conducted energy weapon (CEW) and a firearm, striking the male and injuring him.
  • The male was transported to hospital, where he remains. It is understood that his injuries are not life-threatening.

In accordance with the Police Act, the RCMP contacted the SiRT which has assumed responsibility for the investigation.

The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
