SiRT to Investigate Arrest of B and E Suspect

At approximately 6 a.m. Saturday morning members of the Lower Sackville RCMP and the Halifax Regional Police arrested a 38 year old male on the Magazine Hill Road. The male was a suspect in a break and Enter that had occurred earlier that morning at a sporting goods store on Windmill Road in Dartmouth. After being taken to cells the man was taken to hospital on the advice of EHS personnel. At hospital it was determined that the male had suffered a broken wrist.

As a a result of that injury the matter was referred by police to SiRT who have commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the arrest.

The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, which includes allegations of sexual assault. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Ron MacDonald.

The Team can independently launch an investigation, or begin one after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.

The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the results of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
