CBRPS Officer Involved in Traffic Accident Leading to Death of Man
The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding a collision between a Cape Breton Regional Police Service (CBRPS) vehicle and a pedestrian in North Sydney on Saturday afternoon.
Police and EHS had responded to an earlier incident near the site of the accident, where a young child fell out of a house window. Once EHS was ready to transport the child, the police vehicle left the scene. It travelled only a short distance when it struck a pedestrian near the intersection of Peppet and Perry streets. In spite of immediate assistance provided by the EHS personnel, the male passed away at the scene.
Because of the man’s death, the CBRPS contacted SiRT the same afternoon, who commenced their investigation into the matter at that time.

The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Ron MacDonald.
The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.
The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
