Investigation Begins into Colchester County Accident

Oct
29

The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is investigating the crash of a vehicle into a garbage truck on Highway 4 just north of Highway 104 on October 29, 2014.

Around 3:30 p.m. a member of the RCMP Traffic Services attempted to conduct a traffic stop near Bible Hill.  The car sped away from the RCMP vehicle. After travelling several kilometres the car, while travelling on the left side of the road, collided with a garbage truck, ending up in the left hand ditch. The 19-year-old driver was removed from his vehicle with the assistance of the jaws of life, and eventually taken to the QEII hospital in Halifax with very serious injuries. The driver of the truck was not injured.

In accordance with the Police Act the RCMP referred the incident to SiRT who assumed responsibility for the accident investigation that evening.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call SIRT at 902-424-2010

SIRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Ron MacDonald.

SIRT can independently launch an investigation or begin one after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia, or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.

The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the results of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
