Injury Suffered by Passenger in CBRPS Traffic Stop Investigated
The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has commenced an investigation regarding an injury suffered by the passenger of a truck that was the subject of a traffic stop conducted by a member of the Cape Breton Regional Police Service (CBRPS) on Monday, July 13, 2015.
At approximately 4:30 p.m., as the result of a call from another driver, a marked CBRPS vehicle was attempting to pull over a truck travelling north on George St. The truck turned onto Edgar St. and then onto Donna Drive. At that point the passenger of the truck had exited the vehicle, and was found by police injured. He was taken to hospital, where it was determined he had fractured his leg. He has since been remanded to custody on charges relating to breaching a court order. The driver has been charged with various Motor Vehicle Act charges. As a result of the injury, the CBRPS contacted SiRT to report the incident Monday evening.

The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Ron MacDonald.
The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.
The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
