Investigation Begins Into Cole Harbour RCMP

The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is investigating an injury suffered by a man as he fled in a car from RCMP near Cherry Brook.

 

At about 2:45 a.m. today, Dec. 8, two RCMP officers were conducting a checkpoint on the Number 7 Highway near the Riley Road intersection. 

 

A driver was directed to pull over because of a suspected breach of curfew. The vehicle fled the scene and turned onto Riley Road. Police pursued the vehicle and found it less than a kilometer down the road on its roof.

 

The male driver, in his mid-20's, was seen running from the car and was apprehended a short distance away. He was taken to the QEII hospital where doctors confirmed he had a broken jaw. It is believed he was the lone occupant of the vehicle.

 

In accordance with the Police Act, RCMP referred the incident to SIRT, which assumed responsibility for the investigation.

 

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call SIRT at 902-424-2010.

 

SIRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Ron MacDonald.

 

The team can independently launch, or begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.

 

The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
