Death of Male on Hwy. #125 In Sydney Investigated

The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has commenced an investigation regarding the circumstances that lead to the death of a male on Hwy. #125 in Sydney on Thursday, September 14.At approximately 5 p.m., police were called to respond to a possible altercation on the overpass over Hwy. #125 at the end of Upper Prince St. in Sydney. A member of the Cape Breton Regional Police (CBRP) responded to the call, and encountered two men on the overpass. After the arrival of the officer, a 27-year-old male fell from the overpass. He was found deceased on Hwy. #125.As a result of the incident CBRP contacted SiRT who responded by sending three investigators to Sydney Thursday evening.Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact SiRT, toll free, at 1-855-450-2010.The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Ron MacDonald.The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice.
