SiRT Investigates Domestic Violence Allegation against RCMP officer
On October 20, 2017 Colchester District RCMP contacted SiRT about an allegation of domestic violence made against a male off-duty RCMP officer.
RCMP officers attended a residence in the Bible Hill area regarding an incident involving an off-duty police officer and a female known to him. RCMP determined the matter involved an allegation of domestic violence. As a result, the matter was referred to SiRT which has assumed responsibility for the investigation. The male officer was taken into custody by the RCMP. He was released on conditions later in the day by SiRT investigators. No charges have been laid and the matter is under investigation.
The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, which includes all allegations of domestic violence. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian Interim Director John Scott.
The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.
The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
