Charges laid against HRP officer
The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) today laid charges of assault causing bodily harm, public mischief, and breach of trust against Cst. Laurence Gary Basso, a 37-year-old member of the Halifax Regional Police (HRP).
On March 4, HRP contacted SiRT about information they received from a member of the public relating to an allegation of assault by an HRP Officer on a 54-year-old male at the Metro Turning Point. SiRT opened an investigation into the matter that day.
Cst. Basso is scheduled to appear for arraignment in Halifax Provincial Court on May 22, 2018, at 10:00 a.m.
The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, which includes all allegations of domestic violence. All investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Felix Cacchione.
The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.
The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
