May
10

The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has commenced an investigation that will examine the circumstances surrounding the arrest of a youth in Lower Sackville, NS on the evening of May 5, 2018.

During the evening, the RCMP Lower Sackville detachment received two calls for assistance from the same address. As members were attending the first call, they were advised their services were no longer required.

The two officers attended at the complainant’s address approximately an hour later as the result of a call for assistance related to a disturbance. The youth was known to be violent and while being arrested a Conducted Energy Weapon was deployed.

The youth was taken to hospital to be assessed and was admitted by medical personnel.

On May 8, 2018 information was provided to SiRT by the RCMP, after it was determined the youth had sustained injuries during the arrest. An investigation by SiRT was commenced at that time.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact SiRT, toll free, at 1-855-450-2010.

The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Felix Cacchione.

The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.

The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
