Investigation Results in Charges Against RCMP Member

The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) has laid three charges against a member of the New Minas RCMP.

Cst. Asad Mari will appear in Kentville provincial court on January 29, 2019 to face charges of assaulting his partner, careless storage of a firearm, and pointing a firearm. The charges against the officer relate to incidents between July 1, 2018 and November 1, 2018.

On November 24^th, a call was received by the Kings District RCMP from a third party regarding an allegation of assault against a female by the RCMP member, who was her boyfriend. As a result, the male was arrested, and in accordance with the Police Act, RCMP referred the incident to the Serious Incident Response Team, which assumed responsibility for the investigation.

SIRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Felix Cacchione.

The team can independently launch an investigation or begin one after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.

A public report summarizing the results of the investigation must be filed within three months after it is finished.
