SiRT to Investigate Discharge of Firearm by RCMP Officers

The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) will investigate the circumstances surrounding the discharge of firearms by two members of the RCMP.

This is an additional referral from the RCMP.

Earlier today, the RCMP indicated there were two additional matters referred to SiRT, however, SiRT has determined the other matter is best investigated by the RCMP. Therefore, all inquiries for that matter should be directed to them.

The discharge of the firearms happened on April 19 while the RCMP were continuing their investigation into a gun-related incident in the northern region of Nova Scotia. RCMP referred the matter to SiRT later that day and SiRT commenced the investigation at that time.

SiRT’s mandate is to investigate actions of police that may have led to serious injury or death, or where those actions may raise a significant public interest.

The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.

The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
