Report Released in Cape Breton Regional Police Custody Death

The province's Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has concluded that no charges should be laid against any officer with the Cape Breton Regional Police Service in relation to a man who died in their custody last December.

On the evening of December 9, 2012, police followed up a tip about an SUV alleged to contain a large quantity of marijuana about to board the Newfoundland-Labrador ferry in North Sydney. After arresting the male driver, he was driven back to police cells. On arrival, he was found to be unresponsive. In spite of attempting resuscitation, he passed away. The cause of death was found to be significant blockage of the his coronary arteries. No injuries were caused to the man during his arrest.

While a subsequent search of the vehicle found no drugs, the arrest and other actions of the police were found to be appropriate.
