SiRT Investigating Serious Injury

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving the serious injury of an adult male that occurred during an interaction with the Halifax Regional Police.

Preliminary Information suggests the following:

  • In the early morning of September 17, 2024, police responded to a break and enter in Dartmouth, NS.
  • Officers located a male in a business and issued verbal commands which he failed to comply with.
  • One of the officers deployed their CEW and officers placed the male under arrest.
  • Emergency Health Services assessed the male at the scene and police transported him to the hospital, where he was admitted and diagnosed with a ruptured spleen.

Halifax Regional Police contacted the SiRT later that day, and as a result of the serious injury, the SiRT has commenced an investigation into the matter.

The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
