The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving a serious injury sustained by an adult male following his interaction with police.

Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • July 28, 2024, the RCMP were called to a residence in St. Stephen, NB related to someone causing a disturbance.
  • While on scene, RCMP officers arrested a male and transported him to police cells. While in cells, he complained of extreme pain in his leg.
  • Emergency Medical Services were contacted, and the male was transported and admitted to hospital, where he was diagnosed with a broken leg.

The SiRT was contacted on August 9, 2024, by the RCMP as they were notified by the male that his injuries were sustained during arrest. Due to the serious nature of the injury, the SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation.

The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
