Serious Incident Response Team Investigating Death

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating the death of an adult male who went into medical distress when in cells in Digby, Nova Scotia.

Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • The afternoon of February 10, 2025, RCMP officers in Digby arrested an adult male for public intoxication.
  • While incarcerated at the Digby RCMP detachment the adult male went into medical distress resulting in a serious injury and the male becoming ill.
  • Officers assessed the injury immediately and called EHS.
  • The male was brought to the hospital where he died on the morning of February 11, 2025. 

Due to the death of the male, SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
