SiRT Investigating Serious Injury in Fredericton New Brunswick

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a serious injury sustained by an adult female during an interaction with police in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • On the afternoon of April 4, 2025, members of the Fredericton Police Force responded to a call related to an adult female who was considering self harm.
  • The officers attended the female’s place of residence and assessed that she was a risk to herself.
  • She was arrested under the Mental Health Act and brought to the hospital. 
  • The female was handcuffed, and while being placed in a room in the hospital by police, she went to the floor and has reported she sustained serious injuries to her face.

Due to the serious injury, SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
