SiRT— Ingonish RCMP Arrest of Woman Investigated
The province's independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrest of a 57-year-old woman in Meat Cove, on Sunday, August 10.
Shortly after 11a.m., RCMP from Ingonish responded to a Meat Cove residence regarding a complaint of the pointing of a firearm. The officer arrested the woman, and during the arrest a struggle occurred. During that struggle the woman suffered an injury to her arm, which was later confirmed to be a broken arm. She was brought to hospital in Sydney by EHS for treatment.
As a result of the serious injury, and in accordance with the Police Act, the RCMP contacted SiRT on Sunday afternoon. Two SiRT investigators will travel to Cape Breton Monday morning to commence SiRT’s investigation.
The Serious Incident Response Team is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Ron MacDonald.
The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.
The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
