SiRT Concludes Investigation into Collision Involving Saint John Police Force
The Director of the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) found no reasonable grounds to believe a member of the Saint John Police Force (SJPF) committed an offence in connection with serious injuries sustained by an adult male in a collision with an SJPF police vehicle. On January 19, 2024, the SiRT received a referral from SJPF regarding a male who was struck by a police vehicle in the early morning hours that day. An officer was on patrol on City Road in Saint John, New Brunswick, when a male pedestrian entered the path of the moving police vehicle and was struck. The male was wearing dark clothing and was not in a marked crosswalk. Moments earlier, a truck had to swerve to avoid hitting the male. The male survived the impact and was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, internal injuries, and significant fractures of his right elbow, humerus, femur, and knee. Medical records indicate the male was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation. -30- Media Contact: Khalehla Perrault
