The SiRT Concludes Investigation into Serious Injury Sustained During Arrest

The Director of the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) found no reasonable grounds to believe that Bathurst Police officers committed a criminal offence in connection with a serious injury sustained during an arrest.

On March 22, 2024, the SiRT received a public referral regarding a serious injury sustained by an adult male during his arrest 20 months earlier.  On July 23, 2022, Bathurst Police received a 911 call regarding a domestic violence incident and an individual in distress. Three officers responded to the residence.  While the officers were dealing with the parties on scene, the male became aggressive and pushed an officer’s arm, resulting in him being placed under arrest. During the arrest, a struggle occurred between two officers and the male, resulting in the male being taken to the ground and injuring his shoulder. The male was assessed at hospital, where he was diagnosed with a complex shoulder fracture.
