SiRT Concludes New Brunswick Investigation into Excessive Force During an Arrest

Dec

The Director of the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) found no reasonable grounds to believe a member of the RCMP acted with excessive force during an arrest in St. Stephen, New Brunswick.

In the early evening of July 28, 2024, officers were called to a special care home in St. Stephen with a request to remove an intoxicated male from the property.

The male was arrested for public intoxication and brought to the St. George RCMP Detachment where he was assessed by emergency medical services due to his level of intoxication and complaints of knee pain. He was assessed twice by Ambulance New Brunswick paramedics. The first time he was cleared to stay in a cell but was later transported to hospital by Ambulance New Brunswick to be assessed for ongoing pain in his knee. After the assessment the male was diagnosed with a subtle fracture to the femur.

On August 10, 2024,  SiRT received a referral from the arresting RCMP department stating the arrested male claimed to have been injured during the arrest.
