SIRT Investigates Incident During Arrest

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating after a file was referred to them from the RCMP related to an incident that took place during an arrest.

Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • On June 13, 2024, Western Valley Regional RCMP responded to a call related to a family disturbance and made an arrest. During the arrest, a woman intervened, and an altercation ensued between police and the female.
  • The woman was placed under arrest and during this process she was struck in the face. She was brought to hospital by the RCMP, where she was assessed and was released from the hospital.
  • The SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation as a matter that is in the public interest to be investigated.

The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
