On January 29, 2024, the Sussex detachment of the RCMP contacted the SiRT regarding a report of the distribution of intimate images by an on-duty officer. Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • As part of an internal investigation on another matter, it came to the RCMP’s attention that an officer may have taken and shared intimate photographs or video of a male in custody without his knowledge.
  • The incident is alleged to have taken place in April 2023.

In accordance with the Police Act, the RCMP contacted the SiRT which has assumed responsibility for the investigation as a matter of public interest to be investigated.

The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
