SiRT Investigating Fatal Crash

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal crash last evening in Hammonds Plains.

Preliminary information suggests the following:

 

  • In the evening of February 26, 2024, the RCMP and the Halifax Regional Police were attempting to locate a male suspect in relation to ongoing investigations.
  • Upon learning that the male suspect was in the Tantallon area, RCMP responded.
  • Soon after, the RCMP located the vehicle in Hammonds Plains and attempted to make a traffic stop. The male suspect fled the area at a high rate of speed. Moments later, the vehicle    crashed, and the male driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

As a result of the death, in accordance with the Police Act, the RCMP contacted the SiRT who have assumed responsibility for the investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call SiRT at 1-855-450-2010.

The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
