The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving serious injuries of a male that occurred during an interaction with Lunenburg District RCMP.

Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • Late in the evening of May 16, 2024, police were dispatched to a residence in Lunenburg, NS related to an armed male who was in distress and causing damage to his property. Three officers attended the call.
  • When police arrived, a male had caused serious injuries to himself and continued this behaviour. The male, who was in an agitated state, threw an object at one of the officers. One of the officers discharged his taser, and the male was arrested.
  • EHS entered the house, provided medical aid, and transported the male to hospital, where he remains.

Due to the serious injuries sustained by the male, the SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation.

The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
