SiRT Investigating Serious Injury

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving the serious injury of a man that occurred following arrest.

Preliminary information suggests the following:

  • On April 13, 2024, police were dispatched to a hotel in Saint John, NB regarding an intoxicated male causing a disturbance.
  • The male was arrested and transported to the police station to be placed in cells until sober.
  • While being escorted to the cell the male became resistant and ended up on the ground. The male sustained a serious injury to his arm and was transported to hospital.

In accordance with the Police Act, the Saint John Police Force contacted the SiRT which has assumed responsibility for this investigation.

The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
