SiRT Investigating Serious Injury

The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving the serious injury of an adult female that occurred during an interaction with the Halifax Regional Police.

Preliminary Information suggests the following:

  • At approximately midnight on August 29, 2024, police responded to a 911 call regarding a disturbance at an apartment building in Dartmouth.
  • Police attempted to place an adult male and an adult female under arrest, but they did not respond to police commands.
  • A struggle ensued and the male and female were ultimately placed under arrest and transported to police cells
  • Once in cells, the female was assessed by Emergency Health Services and transported to the hospital to receive medical attention. It was later determined that she suffered a retinal tear. 

The SiRT was contacted by the female on September 3, 2024. Due to the serious injury, the SiRT has commenced an investigation.

The SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
